Internal drive / controller mining rig
-
So, who has set up a mining rig, using mostly internal drives, maybe 8 or more on one machine? Looking for hardware ideas for expanding my mining operation(s). The rest of the mining hardware is really not needed to be very big or fast or hardcore, just really need the harddrives a basic CPU build, and of course a controller / set of controllers to hook the drives up to, and of course a decent PSU with the ports to power them all.

@tomahawkeer I think an external would be a better choice (for me) internal drives are hot and eats a lot of power in the long run with fans and the noise.
anyways, an AMD4 can be used or i5 is okay. 550 w PSU. 8 GB ram. That's okay for a budget friendly build

So far ive just used external as well, however, internal drives tend to be a lot cheaper. I am more or less thinking about the future and a long term type thing. My biggest concern for building an all internal rig, would be the SATA controller. I would want to be able to have in the neighborhood of 16 to 24 drives
Of course I am probably looking at multiple PSU too because most arent going to have the power for that many drives as well. Just kind of thinking out loud atm I guess. Main rig is currently at about 30 TB, and I hate daisy chaining power strips to make it all work for externals.

@tomahawkeer 24 drives! have you 6 free PCI-E slots?
6 of the 4-Port-PCI-Express-SATA-6Gbps-RAID-Controller-Card~PEXSAT34RH
(https://www.startech.com/ie/Cards-Adapters/HDD-Controllers/SATA-Cards/4-Port-PCI-Express-SATA-6Gbps-RAID-Controller-Card~PEXSAT34RH)4 drives in each in RAID 0 config
linux on top of that with BTFS file system
(https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=731923.2940)PSU not such a big deal as most drives require about 5 Watts
Happy mining

@iKnow0 No, im looking for cards that would support more than 4 drives! That would be ideal IMO.
Honestly I think the best bet is probably going to be just sticking to external. Its easy enough to buy a couple of large USB hubs.

@iKnow0 Here are the screenshots of the configuration in case anyone wants to download them.

@tomahawkeer I've got a couple of 8 & 14 drive miners. 10 Drive has an LSI SAS Controller to hook up the mining drives, a PCIe SSD and the OS SSD off the system SATA ports. It's a 4 Core/4 Thread Xeon @ 1.8 GHz. The 14 drive unit combines 6 on board SATA ports and a SAS/SATA Controller - don't recall exactly which one currently. 10 * 3.5" Drives in the chassis 3.5" slots, 4 * 2.5" in a 5.25" to 4 * 2.5" drive bay.
Chassis is: Norco RPC 470
Not sure of power supply off hand, but it had 8/9 SATA power connectors, + Sata Power splitter: Rosewill RCS-302Got any questions - ask.
