What am I doing wrong? - fine tuning a plot / mining setup

  • First and foremost, I am a n00b just getting started in the community, but loving every minute of it so far. Thanks for having me and thanks for the replies in advance!

I'm a software engineer with some dev ops experience. I just finished setup for a headless mining rig running 10TB of plots, mining with dpreyls CPP tools on linux. All in all the bar to entry was much lower than I expected. BUT...

Looking at the recent blocks forged I am noticing some trends:

    • There seems to be a few miners with "pool share" ratios disproportionate to what I expect. Let's take a look at one example, him in green here, me in pink:

(Looking at this image, he has ~3x my capacity, but ~17x my pool share?)

    • He also consistently is showing up on the top miners list, disproportionately to what I would expect.

What am I doing wrong here? Looking at the results I can only draw conclusions that I am making an error somewhere.

    EDIT: duplicate plots, typos, pictures

  • @sters Hi, there is a cosmetic discrepancy in the pool, especially if a person is mining with many PC's. The pool only record the highest plotted PC and none the others. So, that might be the thing you see. He must have more than what we see there. I have 12 TB mining but only shows 3.3 TB in that same pool you're in. 🙂

@sters The capacity is an estimate. If you're using Blago's miner it reports the accurate size of the plot on that PC, but only that PC - and the pool will only use one of those capacities. If you have 10 PC's each with 10TB - the pool will say you have 10TB, not 100TB. One of my accounts has 100+TB - it gets stated as between 3 and 55TB. For other miners, it's a guess, and can be wildly inaccurate.

Take Capacity reports in the pool with a boulder sized grain of salt ......

  • @jervis @haitch Thanks for the replies! and that is good to know, were only potentially seeing the tip of the iceberg because of multiple machines to one user ratio

    Follow-up questions:
Does it pay to "optimize" plots?
is there a pool which is better for miners of a certain size?
I attempted to do some creative plotting here spreading out the start nonces, is that a thing?

SOOO much I don't understand, sorry for the overwhelming wall of text hah!

  • @sters Here is the list of pools and their recommended plot size. Optimization helps your machine read much faster. There is an explanation somewhere in the forum with tables and stuff. You might want to check it out. But, that's the gist of it. FAST and FURIOUS! xD

oh i forgot to answer your last question. No. 🙂 XD

    @sters Plotting - I go with sequential plotting generally, or with multiple machines - this one starts at X * 100Million, this one starts at x + 1 * 100Million ....

Realistically, there is no statistical difference between doing it sequentially and doing it randomly - just as long as they don't overlap.

I see @Jervis has you covered on the pool recommendations - pick one that fits your size.

  • This has been crazy helpful thanks all! My last 2 thoughts for the night I promise

Is there a live chat / IRC for the community that is active? (I found burst on freenode but no one is alive there)

~Reward (approximate reward) for this one particular block, what should I expect to earn? I'm 5th, so is that an estimate i would get 24 burst IF our pool mined the block? or is it some fraction of that 24 burst because I'm not the top dog?

  • admin

@sters Yes, If the pool wins this block, this is your estimated current block earnings for that block, if the pool wins that block - but your actual earnings will be the historical percentage (right-side) and This Block (left side).

Yes, there is go to alttech.chat 🙂
