Do I need a dedicated graphics card or is an onboard graphics chip sufficient?

  • I got a

VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Xeon E3-1200 v2/3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller (rev 09) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])

on my Miner and was wondering if it could be used for plotting. CPU plotting takes an eternity for me.

  • @SimonBruchmann From what I was told, GPU plotting is faster but does not optimize your plot. CPU plotting takes a long time but optimizes your plot. I use CPU cause I'm a cheap mofo that doesn't want to spend money on a gpu. haha

To mine on a pool or solo, you don't need a powerful gpu.

  • @socalguy GPUplotter has 2 modes:

    1. buffer( unoptimized)
    2. direct( optimized)

  • @Daforce oh, I learn something new everyday haha. 🙂

  • Short answer is your CPU is better than the onboard GPU in 99% of cases.

I'd just be patient with the CPU plotting, get more ram so you can plot one file and optimize another on a different drive at the same time.

If you get over 50TB I'd consider a nice GPU for plotting / mining, but you don't need it until then. Or kick out the $150 for a 1050 and it'll be about 2x your CPU speed.
